FACILITATOR TRAINING
THE PROGRAM GIVES PARTICIPANTS:
- a broad view of the history of conferencing
- examination of the underlying philosophies & practices of existing approaches
- a solid understanding of the theoretical foundations of the process
- familiarisation with & practice of conference procedures
- a chance to explore the challenges of implementing a new program & philosophy in a sustainable way within your current setting.
- Ongoing support for facilitators is provided via phone, email & face-to-face coaching (where geography permits). The development of facilitator networks is encouraged in the pursuit of mutual support & quality assurance.
Experience in the education setting has led to a recommendation that the following school personnel be considered for training:
- deputy/assistant principals & principals
- guidance officers & school counsellors
- year coordinators (deans) or heads of house
- specialist staff such as support teachers, home-school liaison officers, welfare staff, behaviour management staff
- teachers with group process skills
- appropriate district/regional office/school council/board of trustees personnel

FACILITATING CONFERENCES FOR SCHOOLS & COMMUNITIES
While school community personnel may have been trained to facilitate Community Conferences for incidents of serious harm such as bullying, assaults, persistent disruption, property damage & truancy, there may be occasions when using an independent facilitator may be a distinct advantage in the wake of a particularly contentious incident or issue.
CLASSROOM CONFERENCE FACILITATOR TRAINING (Advanced training)
This advanced workshop for those who already have some basic training in restorative practice provides facilitation skills for the vexing problem of dysfunctional classrooms that can be deeply stressful for both teachers and students. The conference process has been adapted to achieve a sense of collective responsibility and accountability in the classroom. It in effect, hands the problem back to the students to solve, with the help of the facilitator of course!
A manual, “Restorative Practices in Classrooms: Rethinking Behaviour Management” accompanies this training, available through the outlets mentioned here.

RESTORATIVE PRACTICE IN SCHOOLS: A RELATIONAL APPROACH TO MANAGING BEHAVIOUR
This one day workshop is designed for staff in schools which are implementing (or are about to) restorative practice as a whole of school initiative. It will give staff an opportunity to explore their own beliefs and practices about discipline and is an introduction and orientation to the restorative philosophy and practice.
LEADING RESTORATIVELY (Advanced training)
This two day workshop is designed for senior and middle managers in schools which are already implementing restorative practice. It focuses on the development of leadership skills and their application to the implementation process, and of course to other areas of curriculum and management in the school. Participants will complete a leadership profile for analysis during the workshop. This workshop also covers typical issues which confront senior and middle line managers in managing their own line staff behaviours. Senior and middle managers will at the same time develop skills in and understanding of the application of restorative practice in the often thorny issue of workplace conflict.

“Transformative/Restorative Justice, with its emphasis on repair, makes sense in very practical terms. This is a commonsense approach that fits well with some key government initiatives.”
